Pakistan Alliance on Sustainable Development goal 16 launched

Islamabad, 17 May 2018 :Pakistan Alliance on Sustainable Development Goal 16 (PASDG16) is launched by Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO) and Pakistan Youth Change Advocates (PYCA). The alliance comprises of civil society organizations including Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO), Pakistan Youth Change Advocates (PYCA), Meenaylas, Center for Inclusive Governance (CIG), Youth Advocacy Network (YAN), Institute for Peace and Development (IPAD). The consortium will gain strength in the coming months by taking on-board more youth-led, grass-root civil society organizations from all across Pakistan. Together the Alliance members will be engaged in taking joint action for the realization of SDG 16 and will also build the capacity of relevant stakeholders on the same.

Syed Kausar Abbas, Director Programs of Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO) said, “Pakistan Alliance on SDG16 is a network of young and newly established civil society organizations that would focus on achieving indicators of SDG 16 in Pakistan.” He further added that without peace, stability, human rights and effective governance, based on the rule of law, we cannot hope for sustainable development. “We are living in a world that is increasingly divided. Some regions enjoy sustained levels of peace, security and prosperity, while others fall into seemingly endless cycles of conflict and violence. This is by no means inevitable and must be addressed.”

The SDG 16 aim to significantly reduce all forms of violence, and work with governments and communities to find lasting solutions to conflict and insecurity. In this realm, the realization of SDG 16 that focuses on strengthening the rule of law and promoting peace and justice is integral to Pakistan’s development as a country. Pakistan has already signed memorandum of understanding with Open Government Partnership (OGP) in 2016 but have not submitted its National Action Plan for Open Government Partnership yet. Pakistan and the entire world has to accept the open government standards which falls under SDG 16 to achieve its targets at both national and international level. The thematic areas of SDG 6 mainly covers countering violent extremism and peace promotion, transparency, accountability, access to information and responsive public institutions, rule of law and access to justice, countering human trafficking and child abuse in Pakistan.

Areebah Shahid, Executive Director of Pakistan Youth Change Advocates said, “Pakistan Alliance for SDG16 (PAS16) aims to compliment the government’s efforts for the realization of peace, justice and rule of law in the country.” She further added, “Through the efforts of the alliance members, parliamentarians, grass root organizations and young community members will be capacitated to lead an indigenous movement for the realization of SDG 16 to promote peace, justice and strong democratic institutions in Pakistan.
